The gastrointestinal tract (GI) is sensitive to high doses of radiation. Damage can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, infection and ultimately death. Prodromal effects can manifest at about 1 Gy.
A company called Synedgen has delivered an orally administered medicine which has shown dramatic reduction in animal mortality from GI injury. And they've received more U.S. Army funding for further research.
